The Redwood Empire Food Bank (REFB) will launch its annual summer food drive the first week in May as the nation’s economic downturn and rising costs of food and fuel are forcing more and more Sonoma County residents to seek relief from hunger and food shortages.

David Goodman, executive director of the REFB, said the summertime appeal for donations of food and cash is essential for maintaining the hunger relief supplies through the summer months – especially during these increasingly difficult times – for many individuals, seniors and families.

“Food prices are up. Gas prices are up. The economy is in a slump, and more people are showing up at our food distributions seeking help,” said Goodman. “Last year we distributed 8.9 million pounds of food to some 50,000 people in Sonoma County. We’re on track to distribute 10.5 million pounds this year. That’s an 18 percent increase.”

“At the same time, our costs of providing and delivering food are going up,” said Goodman. “So, we need the help and support of the community more than ever.”

The annual food and cash drive runs May 1 through July.

Food donations can be made at food and drug stores where Redwood Empire Food Bank barrels are in place. Participating barrel hosting stores include Longs Drugs, Safeway, G & G, and Whole Foods.  Bags of food also can be dropped off at REFB headquarters, 3320 Industrial Drive in Santa Rosa
